I already know that there is a risk of getting Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) from using tampons -- does anyone know about any other bad side effects / risks??

Not really... I have been using tamons for many years. The only thing I'm careful of is Toxic Shock. And you do have to be careful. Never wear a tampon at the end of your period when you're not bleeding heavy. If you pull the tampon out and it's real dry is when the fibers from it can be pulled off and and released into your bloodstream. Where a panty liner or pad when this happens. Otherwise, don't worry about it....
Have a nice day !

Taking a used tampon that doesn't have blood on it might not give any side effects, but it still isn't healthy to use it especially from someone else. First your friend has her period and technically is still discharging... she could have left some dead cells on it, therefore could have all sorts of bacteria which could lead to irritation or an infection... and inserting this to yourself might have a slight chance causing problems. And second, exposure to infected blood could also lead to HIV... but I highly doubt that would happen. So don't worry about that! If you don't feel any sort of itchiness or pain in that area(vagina) then you should be fine! :3
