my table is wood and has a very shiny finish

No, this white spot is going to stay there unless you refinish the entire table. I had several of these spots. It gets into the finish ans stays.

I'm not sure how bad the white spot is or what type of wood the table is made of, but I have a mahogany dining table that had white spots on it. I rubbed mayonnaise into the white stain and left it overnite. The next morning when I washed it off, it took the stain out.

I have heard butter or margarine also works but I haven't tried that.

Murphys Oil Soap ( can be found almost anywhere ) and a little elbow grease will remove it just fine - I love this stuff-it cleans all wood products safely and great results.
