When messenger is open, click on the 'preferences' tab. There should then be a box that is checked under either 'sign in/ sign out' or general, that says 'start messenger upon system startup or windows startup. Just uncheclk that box and you should be good to go.

If you're using Windows XP, Messenger is an annoyance you can get rid of. Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, and on the left side, click on Add/Remove Windows Components. Find Messenger and disable it.
