When you Gage reads "empty" you have approximately a three (3) gallon reserve.
How far that means in minutes, (or in miles) depends on the weather, the terrain, and your driving habits. You probably already know your average expected miles-per-gallon - so you can calculate an estimation from there.

I won't guess to say that your trying to win a bet, if you do let it go below empty just to win a bet your going to lose...your fuel pump that is.... The fuel pump is in the gas tank and is running all the time. If your running the car out of gas on purpose the fuel pump will begin to heat up. That will lead to fuel pump failure and a much to expensive repair. The fuel flowing through the pump is what keeps it cool. Try not to go below 1/4 of a tank or in to the red portion of the fuel gage. Your car may have large deposits of rust near the bottom of the tank ( normal in metal gas tanks) that can be picked up when the fuel level drops below empty. That will clog the fuel lines leading to your filter and the filter as well.

Maybe 50 feet. Why would you even want to try it. Fill up the tank and don't let it get below 1/4 of a tank. Any water or debris in gasoline settles to the bottom of the tank. If there is anything in the bottom of the tank, it may get stirred up if you run out all of the gas.

That is one on the dumbest questions I've ever read on this site! Go away, and disappear in your Escort with no gas, you butt-head.
