Generally when u start up a PC a whole load of files are loaded, meaningful and meaningless files.
ur RAM is fixed like a 128MB/256mb. These files occupy most of the RAM, and some software does not do the cleaning of the RAM, so it stays put. This has taken place without u giving any command.
U give a command, say for WORD or EXCEL or any file u require. It adds to the RAM, if the RAM is full, the possibility of Hanging is definite.

Next is how much free disk space u have, as there is shunting of data from RAM->Hard disk->RAM swapping for smooth functioning if space is less then again it can freeze.

u need to clean the PC physically- dust accumulation.
