As long as the pins match you can. In older cpus adding additional ram will increase machine speed and also lead to "aluminum migration" because of the faster processing speed. The increased speed creats friction in the circuitry causing the aluminum to migrate and ultimately will cause circuitry failure.

The best way is using DDR2 and DDR2 (should be the same amount like 512-512mbs, 1Gb-1Gb) or using DDR1 and DDR1 only as you mentioned, with this configuration, your PC will use dual RAM increasing the performance. If using DDR + DDR2, it would be a problem.
