I am not cheating I guess a better way to state me problem would let you know what I have tried and see if it is right. The question did have a typo and sorry for the trouble. The question was supposed to say there are 850 douglas fir and ponderosa trees in a ssection of forest bought by S.L.Co. the company paid an average of $300 for each douglas and $225 for each ponderosa. If the company paid 217,500 for the trees how many of each kind are there? this is what I have got I just need help to know if I am correct 300x+225(850-x)=217500 300x+191250+225x=217500 75x+191250+217500 775x=217500 75x=26250 x= 350 trees each.

D+P=850
300D+225P=217500
4D+3P=2900
-3D-3P=-2550
adding
D=350
substitutingP=500
so 350 douglas trees and
500 ponderosa trees would be it

300x + 225(850-x) = 217500
300x + 191250 - 225x = 217250
75x = 217250 - 191250
75x = 26000
x = 346.66 = 347
so they bought 347 rees of douglas
& 850 - 347 = 503 trees of ponderosa.

(850-x)*300+x*225=217500
255000-300x+225x=217500
75x=37500
x=500

so there are 500 douglas and 350 ponderosa tree
