I'm primarily concerned with not getting shot and secondarily concerned with affordability.

I live in Las Vegas. The best parts of town to live in are: Henderson, Green Valley, the general SW, Summerlin, Centennial Hills (NW) and Aliante (North Las Vegas).

The discussion board at the site listed below is full of extremely helpful people including a realtor named Rhonda Brinkerhoff. She is a native Las Vegan and can help find apartments in safe areas. She can also help find a house or condo to rent, which is something you should consider because apartment rents are high and you could get a house for about the same price. Even cheaper if you get a roommate. Rhonda was my realtor when I bought a house.

I like the area called Silverado Ranch. It's a large suburb that's close Green Valley, which has all the stores (and traffic) and also has easy access to the strip and UNLV via the airport tunnel (about 10 minutes). You might consider renting a room in a house. Look on Craigslist.com. I've seen rooms as cheap as $450 plus utilities in a nice 3 or 4 bedroom house w/ roommates in their 20's. It would be much nicer than an apartment. Silverado Ranch is basically the area bordered by Bermuda, Silverado Ranch Rd, Maryland Pkwy and Pebble/ Windmill. Zip code 89123. Good luck

Las Vegas has gotten pretty expensive. I used to live there. I'd stay away from the Southeast (UNLV) area. It's gone downhill in my opinion. Stay away from the area around the Stratosphere. Stay away from Downtown area. I think I'd look on thev Westside. Out West Tropicana. Or maybe even Henderson.
