do a boil wash with an empty machine once a month, i do this, i't helps keep the pipes clogging up with powder too.... dont put any powder in..... do it totally empty...... you'll still see the water has detergent in from the pipes....
also, for smells that gather in the pipes, use an lime scale remover on an empty boil wash too
something else you could do is leave the washer door open at nights, AND also think about removing and cleaning the filter... you'll find all sorts of filth and dirt in there, and maybe some long lost jewelry...

Wash the Washer! Wash machines need to be cleaned every so often. Use a gallon of distilled vinegar with warm water. Run thru a wash/rinse cycle. This should clear up odor in the machine and the hoses. Be sure to vacuum under the machine and the backside also. Wet dust smells terrible.

Place just a couple of items in the machine, add powder/liquid as usual and this time add some bicarb of soda with it. This should help. Also, when the machine isn't being used, leave the door slightly open (even though closing it looks tidier). This gives it a chance to air. The damp smell is probably the result of closing the door too often.

throw a bottle of bleach into the machine drum and run your washing machine at the hottest cycle with no clothes in it, this will kill the smell of damp and oder that has built up behind the drum.you may have to do this twice if the smell is really bad.

run your machine without clothes in it for an entire cycle add soap, use very hott water...after your done with the cycle, always leave the door open so it will not build up that damn damp smell...I have a machine that did the same thing and it worked out for me, if you close the door the smell continues to grow in the machine...leaving the door open lets the machine air out, but at least you will not have to deal with that horrible smell...my machine has a door on the side and I spoke to the Maytag man and he told me many machines have this problem due to the side door, there is always a little water left in the machine after each wash and an open door would prevent the musty smell build up...
Good Luck

Run a few loads with baking soda added to the water.
Always leave your washing machine's door open in between uses so that it can dry out fully. Not only will this prevent unwanted smells but it will give the rubber parts of your machine a longer life span.

Put your washing machine on your hottest setting with vinegar and use soda crystals or bleach.. don't put any clothes in and this will wash the drum and clean out any waste. Then put your wash on two separate washes and then wash as normal..

a few loads of whites with bleach may help. possibly, it is leaking onto the floor, which could cause a "damp" smell. just a thought. You might add dryer sheets (anti static, like bounce) to the dryer for a fresher smell.
