Christopher Columbus 1492

the word is: continent

Christopher Columbus is the incorrectly Latinized name of Don Cristoval Colon, the navigator and maritime explorer wrongly credited as the discoverer of the Americas. He was sponsored by the Catholic Monarchs and eventually became an admiral for the Crown of Castile. His voyages across the Atlantic Ocean began a European effort at exploration and colonization of the American continent. While history places great significance on his first voyage of 1492, he did not actually reach the mainland until his third voyage in 1498. Likewise, he was not the earliest European explorer to reach the Americas, as there are accounts of European transatlantic contact prior to 1492. Nevertheless, Columbus' voyage came at a critical time of growing national imperialism and economic competition between developing nation states seeking wealth from the establishment of trade routes and colonies. Therefore, the period before 1492 is known as Pre-Columbian, and the anniversary of this event (vd. Columbus Day) is celebrated throughout the Americas and in Spain and Italy. However, as the legacy of colonialism in the Americas is today viewed somewhat more negatively than in the past, Columbus has become a divisive figure.

Amerigo Vespucci (1454—1512) was an Italian explorer who the continent of America is named after.

Christopher Columbus (Don Cristoval Colon) is CREDITTED with discovering it. He is believed to have been from the Republic of Genoa, in Italy.

Although history places great significance on his 1492 voyage, Columbus actually didn't reach the mainland until 1498. Many historians believe that Columbus was not the first to "discover" the American Continent.

I think the Vikings were here first. Then the Spanish went in to Florida. There were people east of what was called a territory that made up Virgina, Tennessee, Kentucky. etc. in the 1500's. I have ancestors that lived along the coast in that area in the 1500's. When they landed at Plymouth Rock, they were a group of fifty people. About fifty died during the winter. The Indians helped them a lot. At that time one of the Chiefs could speak fairly good English and had already been to England. These are some of the things that aren't being taught in school. Or maybe we were to young or wasn't interested enough to remember.

Native Americans
According to theory, they came from present-day Russia over the Bering Strait into present-day Alaska.

Of course, other people might say Christopher Columbus, or Amerigo Vespucci... Vespucci is actually who the Americas were named after because he claimed to have discovered them first, but it's all hearsay... There wasn't much to support his story that he even sailed over here. Then there's Columbus, but he thought he discovered another part of Asia--the Indies.
I think they both came from Italy...

It is believed that Norsk Vikings may have landed on the American continent several centuries before Columbus. Accounts describe accuratley an attack by Native Americans which the Viking party was too small and ill - equipped to repel and so they fled.

Cristoforo Colombo discovered america but he did not recognize it as a new continent (he was looking for a new way to reach India);
Amerigo Vespucci, went in new continent after Colombo and recognized it.
Is for this reason that America has this name (Amerigo>America) instead of Colombia.

both the navigators come from Italy (not from spain!!!).
