I went onto device manager on my WIRELESS pc and noticed there was a yellow exclamation mark next to "PC Simple Communications controller", so i went onto properties of that and pressed reinstall drivers. The pc automaticaly installed "conexant d850 56k v.9x dfvc modem". So i ran a search on yahoo and found that to be something to do with faxing? But i dont even have a fax machine in my house and my modem is BELKIN, not whatever "conexant d850 56k v.9x dfvc modem", so have i done something wrong? What is all of this about as i dont even have a fax machine??
Thanks alot :-)

Don't worry, you've done nothing wrong. The conexant modem is for use with a dial up internet connection. As you are using wireless you will be on an always connected broadband connection. You can leave it as it is, or go to add and remove programmes in control panel and remove it, or use system restore. It won't cause any problems if you leave it though.

Hi, this a built in Fax/Modem, from the days when wireless and broadband Internet were still a pipe dream, still installed in many PCs both desktop and laptops. Not everyone has access to broadband (or can afford it) so they still use dial up modems to access Internet/emails and unlike broadband you can also use as a PC based fax machine with the proper software. If you are using a desktop then it is a simple operation to remove the modem, most are installed in a PCI slot, you will know it by the telecoms type input/outputs, if you are using a laptop, then unless you are competent, I would advise you leave it installed in the computer but you can de-activate it in control panel. Hope this helps

BELIKIN is the bran that manufatured that paticular 56k fax/modem card, many PC came stoke with them, not only does it serve as a Dial up Internet card, but can also be used to send a fax over your own phone line ( with the proper software) you plug in your telephone line just as you would if you had dailup Internet ( In Port), the card your should also come with an out port, you can use this to hook your home phone up, so you dont loose one phone in the house.

conexant d850 56k v.9x dfvc modem : is just the name the computer chose to use best to work for your 56k fax/modem card

If you choose to use it, It beats having to find a fax machine!, lol when you can use your own phone line to send a fax, its free if its a lond distance fax, you just pay the same as if it were a long distance phone call ( time duration)

here is a great site for free pc fax software dowload:
http://www.download.com/3120-20_4-0.html?tg=dl-20&qt=free%20fax&tag=srch

put if you dont use the 56k fax/modem card, you could always take it out to add sumthing else in its spot..

hope this helps

yeah. pretty much what the previous person said. Although, you could physically remove it from your PC and sell it on Ebay for a few quid- if your motto is 'every little helps'?!
