If UK Pounds 22k is a salary which is on an extremely lower side what then is a decent pay packet in the UK,also considering that I do not surely have an extravagant life, and that what if two people in a family(spouses) work and make the ends meet ?
Could any one guide me w.r.t rentals of a very modest but comfortable accomodation for a couple in 1) London 2) other cities/towns,what is the mode of daily commute to work if one does not/cannot afford own car ?

Hello!

I am living in (central) London for almost 2 years.
22k is not a bad salary, specially if you are planning on working something that doesn't require a university's degree. However, it is not going to be easy.
The average salary is something between 15k and 20k.
A good salary is something above 25k. Usually 25k is for someone with no experience, but that holds a university degree.
You can find a large range of flats and houses to live in London and outside. You can rent a double room, in most cases all the bills are included, or you can rent a flat, but in this case you must consider council tax, telephone, water, electricity, gas, etc.
If you are planning to live outside London, you must think that you will spend a lot of time commuting. (that's why I decided to live in central London)
If you chose to live outside London and work in central London, you can take the tube, bus, train, etc.
If you own a car, we will have to pay congestion charge, during the week between 7h and 18:30 (I think): £8 a day.(excluding Saturday and Sunday)

If you need anything else, I am more than happy to help.
Good luck!

And to those that don't know what 'w.r.t.' means, here is a hint 'with reference to'.

You can live on 22k in London, but it ain't going to go far.
My knowledge is pretty much restricted to west and central London, but you'd be lucky to get away with £500 a month for a room in a shared house/flat.
I know people who commute from other places, Reading etc., but unfortunately it's probably cheaper to use a car if you're travelling alone; after what maggie did to our railways :(

Rentals vary from about £400 per month outside of London. Good luck.
