I'm a full-time college student, enrolled at a private school, majoring in Business Admin. with a minor in Political Science. I know how stressful it was for me working 9-11 hours a day and come home to do homework late at night and still try to make excellent grades -- I did this while attending my first college. Recently I transferred to a private school (the one I mentioned earlier) and am having seconds thoughts about working -- even part-time. I don't want to jeopardize my GPA because of it; yet, at the same time, I'm feeling guilty because of the fact that I live with my mom and would not be working.

Is this wrong to be only focused on school and good grades, instead of working on the side??

My mom repeatedly says she prefers that I not work at all while in school, and concentrate solely on making good grades, but I'd still feel bad if I did that.

Take it from a Mom ... do as she says ....
Help her around the house, cook sometimes, pick up after yourself, etc .... other than that, get the very best grades you can. Your mother will be so happy for you, and happy she could help you.

My daughter has to work, go to school, and is raising a baby, as well as having her youngest brother live with her. I so wish I was in a position that she would just be able to go to school and concentrate on her diploma!!

you are in school to graduate with the highest GPA possible, but while in school you need some "real-world" experience in your chosen field.
so if you feel that working during the school year is hazardous to your GPA, opt for summer jobs, there are many places that offer internships directly related to your major.
there is nothing wrong with not working as long as you're not being lazy or taking advantage of the fact that you're not working by overspending other people's money or goofing off. And it does not sound like you're doing that.
you know your personal limitations. if working and studying is too stressful you can either find a work-study position, these usually only require 10 -15 hours a week or wait until the summer/winter breaks to work.

No. of course not. Anybody would surely say that u are not being selfish. If u concentrate more on ur studies and get excellent grades, u are likely to be employed in a better-paid job. so u would surely be helping ur mother out than being a burden on her. But if u feel totally comfortable with working while studying, then be it. But see that whatever decision u take, does not hurt ur mother..... I would say u continue studying without working and put ur heart into it. All the best..... :-)

I think you are in a dilemma. But in your position, you should work hard in doing well in school while helping your mom with the cooking and other chores. Perhaps work during the weekends if you really need the spare cash. Dont feel guilty, do what you can do best. Not all human beings can be perfect yeah.

i understand where you're coming from. i too feel compelled when i concentrate on my stuff and forget to help out at home. i guess since it's quite hard to work on the side, why not help out at home in terms of chores and stuff.also, think of the future, if you concentrate on your studies and get a good degree, you might get a good paying job which can support your mom so she wouldnt need to work.or u can check out things like online marketing so you can work at home. check this out:http://www.freedom.ws/roycalvin/index.dhtml. many recommended it to me and im still trying it out too. all the best!

If your mom is okay with it, no.
