Usually it's only done if the mother's life is in danger, when they have to choose one over the other. On a purely biological survivalist mode, considering that so many more years of time and effort went into the mother's life to get her to that point it seems a wiser choice to allow her to live. Especially if she already had other kids to take care of. It's a hideous situation to be faced with, but for the life of a mother who already has other kids? Someone's going to die, it seems wiser to make sure it's not the one that's needed most. Parents have an obligation to stick around for the kids they already have. You'd be surprised how protective a mother can be when her older kids need her.

At least that's my initial thoughts on it. Not sure I would be able to do it myself, but I wouldn't begrudge anyone else if they had to decide.

The only other time I think it would actually be worth it is if the kid had a terrible, untreatable condition that would make them suffer hideously (like that genetic condition that makes your skin fall off... not doing any favors allowing the kid to live through that at all. Believe me, there are worse things than death). But they should be able to find out about any such conditions long before the kid is that well developed. The earlier the abortion, the better, although they are all killing in my book. I just don't believe that killing is always the wrong choice. Sometimes it just has to be done. It's just so tricky to know when that time is, and it's always terribly sad.

Tough, tough topic, but I'm glad you're asking.

The term "partial-birth abortion" is not a medical term and it does not identify any particular abortion procedure. Dont know why they perform it!
