I am such an idiot. What do I say? What do I not say. He's young, 14, but older than me. I'm just a silly girl. I need to grow up fast. What do I need to know? I don't know much about his illness. I don't want to make him sad, and I owe him my honesty. I just need real advice on being the best friend I can be. Please advise. He's my friend. We only meet on chat.

No, you are not an idiot, nor a silly girl! You are young, and it's hard even for adults to talk about an illness sometimes. There are two places you can go to learn about leukemia. There are different kinds, but it is cancer of the white blood cells.

www.webmd.com

www.mayoclinic.com

These sites tell about the different types and what is done for treatment, etc.

If this boy is for real, just be supportive as you would any other friend. If he is receiving treatment, he is probably trying to live as normal a life as possible. Just be yourself and be a friend!

But please be careful when you are talking to a stranger on the chats. Never tell your last name or where you live or where you go to school. There are many men who go into these chats and pretend to be a teenager. They try to arrange a meeting with a boy or a girl, and can do much harm. So just be careful! But you probably already know this!

It's leukemia and there is treatment for it. There's no need for you to act any differently than you have been. Continue to be as much of an online friend as you can be. If this boy ever says hey come meet me then you need to do a double take because there are predators on chats that will use any means necessary to get at youngsters. Don't EVER arrange to meet anyone from online unless your parents are with you and tell this boy that and see what he says about it. If it's no then you'll know he's a grown man trying to get at you.

For 1 you are not just a silly girl. i'm the same age as him and all i can say is be supportive. Talk to him a lot. Be confident that he'll survive and make sure that he knows that you care. But don't look like you are just feeling sorry for him. No one wants that. Leuakemia is a cancer. A cancer that kills thousands of people by the way. You lose your hair from the treatment for it. Ask him if he is on chemotherapy. Good luck sweet heart!
