I've been looking at getting myself an M3, 350z, STi, or even an RX-8. The car I really want is the M3 but the only thing that is holding me back are the repair costs that are supposedly infamous. Are BMW repair and maintenance costs that bad?

Most upscale cars, including BMW, provide free maintenance up to 50K miles, which is extendable to 100K. There aren't any more new M3s anyway, so buy CPO, and I *believe* the extended service is included, which means maintenance is free up to 100K miles.

Repairs - I haven't found M3 parts to be more expensive than other manufacturers. There's a strong aftermarket presence, which lowers costs in general.

The STi is strong competition, but is more Kid Racerish; the other 2 aren't really comparable. Check out the Lotus Elise for another option (they use Toyota engines in the States, so reliability isn't so much of an issue).

Repair costs are directly related to the retail price of the car when it was new,
Expensive car new? Expensive repairs always.
Hope this helps
