To Readers:
I'm formatting a computer for the first time. I have OS disc, Drivers disc, Accessories, ETC got everything i'd say. This computer is from 2003. Got it as a XP and i want to like empty it out and reinstall. My disc says : Gateway Operating System....Windows XP Home Edition -use this cd to reinstall your operating system.- "to begin 1. insert this cd into the cd/dvd drive....2. restart the computer....3. follow on screen instructions....................im installing windows XP. i just want to take everythin off, slow computer. I backed up important files onto disc.
In conclusion, will i need to use commands on command promt? Or does "on screen instructions" mean i dont need to know commands and just read and follow on from disc?

Insert ur cd into cd/dvd drive & restart. the cd will boot automatically. on the top of the screen "" press any key to boot from cd " then press any key. then it will load. after that.... u can see all the instruction on the screen. there'll be an option repair your operating system. dont repair it. when u'll see ur drives. select ur C:\ drive & install ur windows. it'll format the drive & ask u to choose file format. select FAT file system. after restarting ur pc it'll continue. dont press any key when ur pc restart. if u press any key it'll start from begining. so dont press any key & it'll go on the installation process. after some time it'll ask u to select region & language & time & CD KEY. then continue... it'll finish automatically. at the last time pc will restart again & windows will start. try it.... :)

Make sure you've backed up everything you want to keep.
Internet Bookmarks/favorite, additional fonts you've acquired, perhaps data & settings files of various software you plan to reinstall, etc.
I suspect the disc you have is a recovery disc so that you won't have a true clean winxp installation, but a return to how the computer was when new from the manufacturer with the extra crap they like to install.

The disk will make it very easy for you to reinstall. It will erase EVERYTHING on your drive so make sure you backed up anything you want first.
Once you start the process it will only take a few mouse clicks and entering the time and date (and about 3 hours). You don't need to know any DOS commands.
Good luck!

The on-screen instructions will use a GUI. No command prompt needed. Enjoy your new clean install!

select new install instead of upgrade option while installing this time.. when the setup gives you a choice of where to install the os.. showing all the current partitions at the bottom of the screen.. wait and read the instructions and choices you've got there... from that screen you can delete all the partitions one by one.. and then you can create partitions too.. but my advice is that create only one partition from that menu.. . . even easier is to first install some partition software in your current OS and then delete all partitions using that software.. when this is done pop in ur XP cd and boot from it and install by making a new partition.. but again do not create partitions other than the partition in which you r going to install XP.. . . after installing XP. install some partitioning software and create rest of the partitions... . .. you can experiment as much as you like since you've backup of ur data. . . .happy experimenting...

if you add or remove or change any hardware in your computer before, you might need to contact Microsoft about a new serial key number.
else, it is not advisable to use command prompts installation method for beginners.
you shouldn't be prompted for command prompts but instead windows' prompts theoretically.
good luck!
