because then teachers will have do deal with the pathetic excuses of parents. In their eyes the child can do no wrong-they are the 'victim'.- of bullying, being singled out by the teacher, they are from a single family etc.
Wish these parents would get real, their kids are unruly, undisciplined yobs who cannot face up to any responsibility.

I don't think that's true. Schools are not allowed to use corporal punishment. Students who present a threat to themselves or others are placed in another educational setting (like maybe a group home).
It's important that parents teach children the value of a good education. It's also important that they trust the school to do the best job they can to educate their child. Badmouthing the school in front of the child is counterproductive to this. (This never happened when I was in school!) The child then goes back to school and mouths off at the adults who work at the school.
The educational team consists of 3 people-the teacher, the student, and the parent. If any of the 3 are not "on board" the student loses. I think if parents were held accountable (among many things-not providing a quiet study area, not having the child do school work before going on video games, not asking about the child's day, not providing school supplies when financially able to do so, etc.) then the tide would turn.

Teachers arent allowed to touch them years ago it was only a threat of the cane that kept kids in place and the police had more respect from kids as well. A well known saying is now very true "spare the rod spoil the child" is very true. Having worked with kids in school I was told if they have a really bad paddy in the playground laying on the floor - you have to leave them there and not touch them. My son has mild austism and he regularly will go under a table and not come out. The teachers arent allowed to do anything. Years ago they would have pulled him out. I believe just the threat of the cane or similar would work teach them some respect. No good blaming parents all the time we arent allowed to hit them for fear of being charged with assult or social services getting involved!

I wish I knew Zena! I work in a high school and the rule is misbehaviour leads to 5 mins detention, then 10 mins detention, then an after school detention for up to an hour (depending on their behaviour whilst in detention).
If they miss going to 4 detentions though they get excluded for a day-this is what they love, a day off school to do what they want!
We have a seclusion unit within the school but this is only used for students with totally unacceptable behaviour ie: swearing at a teacher or violence towards teachers or other students.
I dont think this works either as they are proud to tell their friends they have done"time" in the cooler.
I think the parents should be made to come in school and work with them, I'm sure the kids wouldn't be so cocky and arrogant then.

Is it surprising when there are 1000 head teacher vacancies in UK schools? They can hardly be leading from the top. In all those schools who is there to take the responsibility for providing good discipline? Teachers of the right calibre are not applying for this promotion as headmasters are now full time penpushers snowed under by adminstering the ridiculous government league table requirements at very little more salary than a Head of Department.

This is a problem but I don't know whether caning would stop it, I'm all for trying it. So many teachers have been attacked that I am sure they are quite afraid of their violent pupils. Some have been killed, after all.
I think the time is coming when some kind of police will need to be installed in violent classrooms.

Because nowadays the Do-Gooders have decided that all forms of punishment are illegal. Court cases and Summonses are the common result. Therefore no correction of unruly behaviour is possible. The kids concerned know that nothing can be done so they have no fear. Like you I've been caned at school and it never did me any harm. (Ah the good old days!!)

It has to do with harassment. All the teacher is there for is to teach. Why should the teacher have to stress over unruly children? It comes down to having it be the kid's choice, he/she goes to school to do what he or she wants to do, obviously being influenced by children around him or her. ALSO, showing physical discipline at school would probably only cause a child to not want to go, or to rebel even more.

I totally agree. At the school where I teach, the only thing we can do to unruly kids is take away their recess. Most don't care if they get their recess taken away. They would much rather stay inside. Our school still uses corporal punishment, but it is rarely given. The principal is too afraid of lawsuits from parents.
