The more memorable memories are usually the ones that have had a bigger effect in your life. Most of them also have to do with your current interest. No one remembers things they found boring. Some other memories that stand out are mistakes that you just can't get over or took a long time getting over, or tragadies that happened in your life that took a lot from you.

Memories stand out to varying degrees for two related reasons.

1. When you learn, pathways are created in your brain connecting the new knowledge to previous knowledge. The more connections your brain makes between information, the easier that information will be to access later.

2. During one stage of the dream cycle, called REM, the brain reorganizes information that has been processed during the day. The brain effectively decides which information is important and which isn't. This is why you can't remember where you parked your car a few months ago, yet you can remember different events from your childhood. If our brains did not discard any information, there would be just way too much!

Well, may be because they concern people or things u are most attracted or attached to. Or because they included u being appreciated or scolded profusely. When ur mind likes some memories or when the happenings are much effective, they sort of get incribed onto the brain and stand out more than others... :-)

I believe it's because they're the ones that are most memorable and they hold a special place, in your heart. Some memorie's are pushed to the back of our minds and sometimes it'll take a certain situation, to bring them forward. Kind of like a "gone but never forgotten".

well i think the most important memories, memories that make u happy or hurt u inside remain for much longer...it's all in the head and sometimes the heart does a good job with remembering things ;)...but sometimes it is well to forget your past(not completely) i have a favorite quote : "life needs to be learned looking back and lived looking foreword"

Because your brain thinks they're most important. Like I can remember when I first started descending stairs quickly, with 1 foot on each step.
