Video game life cycles run so that a new system comes out in 5-6 years, not 1-2 years. Xbox ran their cycle in 4 years, since their original system was gaining hype they wanted to pass that onto its successor, however. PS2 came out in 2000, PS3 - 2006. Gamecube and Xbox - 2001, Wii - 2006, Xbox 360 - 2005.
Why would people pay $5k? Probably because they want to own something the moment it comes out and when they missed getting a system at the launch, realized they just can't wait. Maybe to show off they have something others don't. And also because they can afford it.
The whole fiasco of crazy upped prices and crazy rushes reminds me of a scene from Pee-Wee's Big Adventure:
-Hello, Francis.
Today is my birthday. My father said I can have anything I want.
-Good for you and your father.
Guess what I want?
-A new brain?
No. Your bike. What's so funny, Pee-wee?
-It's not for sale, Francis.
My father says, "Everything is negotiable," Pee-wee.
-I wouldn't sell my bike for anything. Not for a hundred, billion, million, trillion dollars.

Lol, if i were a hardcore fan i'd pay it.
Sometimes a fan's gotta do what a fan's gotta do to be loyal!
I dont understand it fully m'self. I'm a wii-person, but i wasnt camping or anything waiting for it. I have patience, know i'll get it soon, etc etc.
My friend camped out 4 days for a ps3, walked to his car, and took an offer from a stranger for 2k to give his away.
Crazy dude... Video Game Fans are craaaa-zzzy....

i was wondering the same thing! regardless of whether or not another one is coming out in the next year or two...can't people just wait for the next dang shipment? its not that serious! i want a ps3, but i can wait a few more months if i have to!

You've got to pay more to get the first release with all the kinks still intact.
By the way, Amazon.com has them for $1,899.99 so you can overpay for games to make up the difference.
