This is not my line of expertise, and frankly I'm stumped as to where to even begin looking. my current card is a radeon 9700 with 256MB ram, so the card I get needs to be a fairly large step up from this. If possible it should be able to support direct-x 10 for Vista. Most essentially it must be of the AGP8 standard (I'm feeling too cheap to buy a whole new motherboard)

Having looked around the various sites it seems the Radeon x1650 (256mb ram) is about as good as it gets... Anyone heard anything good/bad about this card?

I dont think you'll find a directx 10 card for agp, as most of the high end cards are now on pci express and sli, but i could be wrong.

However, there are plenty of excellent cards that can run every game on the market, WITHOUT needing to be directx 10 or have a gagillion mb of ram.

www.tigerdirect.com has some EXCELLENT deals for agp cards, ranging from as low as just 120 dollars for some powerful pieces.

We just installed a Radeon 9250, with 128 MB and AGP 2.0/3.0 in a Compaq box to run a second display. It cost about $80 and works well, but may not have as much horsepower as you are looking for.

7600 AGP is the best you can get.
Its not DX10, but you won't get that on AGP.
