I teach Spanish and we work with a lot of vocabulary and also literature.

If you have some hard words that the kids need to spell start the class with a "quickstart" vocabulary scramble. Put the kids in small groups and give them about 8 words all scrambled. The first 2 groups to unscramble the words win candy. You can take attendance while they do this.

Photocopy a simple board game. Type questions and cut them apart. Put the questions in envelopes. The kids can use coins or erasers for markers. They roll a die (buy at the dollar store) and pick a card. If they can answer the question (vocabulary or literature) then they move the spaces. If they cannot answer it then they either stay or have to move back that number of spaces.

Flyswatter game: Put all of your vocabulary and/or characters on the board in random order. Divide the class in 2 halves and 1 kid from each team comes up to the board. Say the definition or a trait of the character. The first kid to hit the answer with his flyswatter wins a point. State the rules; NO HITTING EACH OTHER!

At www.puzzlemaker.com you can create your own puzzles. I sometimes make crosswords with my specific vocabulary and/or literature as the clues. Word searches are also good but the hidden word is the vocabulary word and then I type a separate list that has the definitions. I tape the definitions to the word search and they have to figure out what the answer is in order to find the word.

Buy a basketball hoop at the dollar store. The kids (one from each team; usually 5) go to the board at once. State the question. The first student to answer it correctly gets a point and gets to take a shot. If they get the basket they get an extra point.

I would google "Fun ESL lesson plans" I've never tried it so I'm not sure but one fun activity would be drawing idioms. Give each student an idiom to draw like "let the cat out of the bag" or "Blow your top" and then have them share their idiom and what people really mean by it. This might me more advanced than what you're looking for but good luck.
