i have a Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop with Sony drive-CD RW/DVD CRX830E. With this I can play DVDS but cannot burn.Is there a way of upgrading this drive, enabling DVD burning ? Is any free software available?

You may want to try MicroCenter, they sell OEM drives(means it just comes in a bag, no manual and such). Good drives too, Samsung!

I paid about $29 for my dual layer DVD burner that also will burn lightscribe disks. It also came with a free version of Nero Express that gives you all the basic DVD burning functions that you need.

I believe that you can order off their website as well if there is not a store near you,

Sorry, but to enable burning you will need an entirely new drive. The difference is in the mechanism of the laser so it's not something that can be changed with a simple software switch. Depending on how competent you are feeling with PCs you may either go with the simple solution and buy an external DVD writer or you could replace the internal one.

In either case, you will have to replace that drive if you want to burn DVDs

no you have to buy and install a DVD reader writer

Although you may consider using an external one that works via the USB port
