If it was my daughter, I would politely tell her to give me a break for a bit (which I have had to do with her), or if it was during a movie I would say "shhhh..trying to pay attention to the movie", but when it is a "step" i feel I have to be more careful of his feelings. The boy lost his mom for goodness sake. What would you do?

he is looking for a mother's love. you are his mom now, so you should treat him as you would your daughter, which also includes giving hugs and praises of encouragement. don't look at him as your step son, look at him as your son

I think a lot of step mothers would love to be in your shoes, to have a stepchild like them well enough to talk to them. It's not always that way. Perhaps the child needs to see a psychologist to help him unload some of his baggage. Bless you both!

Unless you're busy doing something, just listen to him, apparently he likes you enough to talk to you at all. Consider it a blessing that he talks to you, not all step mothers and step sons get along.

talk back...you should feel like it is a sweet gesture for him to want to get to know you and wants you to get to know him. you said he lost his mom, if she died give him a break. get to know the kid, thats all. show some interest and maybe he will back off once in awhile.

I think it's the fact that he wants your attention, and doesn't know any other way to get it.
