What's this Japanese movie about a boy & his old man neighbour who go on a three day trip to find his dad.

I need to know the title of this movie, and in it there's a boy living with his Mom. He ends up going looking for his father with his 50 something year old neighbour, who takes him to a horse race track along the way. There the boy at first seems to be able to pick the races and they win a lot, and the boy gets a new jockey outfit to velebrate, but in the end they lose all the money and the outfit. At one point the kid almost gets molested by some guy, but the old man takes him behind a building and smacks him around. I also recall the hitch hiked and rode in a big truck at one point, as they were on foot for the entire journey. I'm not clear on the ending but I think they found the dad and he had a new family or something. The boy was maybe around ten, chubby, awkward. Please help, I really want to find this subtitled movie again one day!
