Well, when I go to certain sites, or actually most sites, I can't see most pictures. Also, when I have to type in the characters I see in the "security code box" for verication that I am not spam, I can't see the characters in the box.

Try to update activex control for your browser(internet explorer - IE)
Also, IE->Tools->internet options->advanced tab(top right hand corner)->multimedia(in the list) -> check show pictures .
If doesnt work then try restoring defaults in Advanced tab & also Reset web settings in Programs tab in Internet Options.

You insatll a standard antivirus soft ware such as Norton, AVG , Avast ( free antivirus software and Ad-aware, Ewido ( free spyware removers). You can download free softwares at
