I think some people here are being confusing. IVF (In-vitro fertilisation) is when a woman's egg (which has been removed from her ovaries) is injected with a single sperm from her partner and the resulting embyro (sometimes more than one to increase the chance of success) is replaced back into the woman's womb. This is used for women with fertility problems such as blocked tubes, where the egg cannot travel by itself to be fertilised in the womb. This procedure can also be used for couples where they cannot for whatever reason, have a healthy child of one sex. So, some embryos are made through IVF and the ones of the required sex, are implanted back into the uterus. This would be carried out when a couple are carriers of a disease or syndrome which would affect for example only male children, and result in them being profoundly handicapped or have a very short expected life span. There are also cases where a couple choose this "sex-selection" because they have several children of one sex and want one of the other. This is very controversial and as far as I am aware, not available in the UK as it is so open to abuse.
When someone is fertile but doesn't want to have sexual intercourse eg. lesbians - they would usually opt for artificial insemination. That is where the mans sperm is inserted into the woman at her cervix and it makes its own way into her uterus to fertilise an egg and result in pregnancy.

There are some people who believe that one day IVF will be the prefered method of becoming pregnant among all women. I'm too lazy to find the link, but if you are interested, you can search for the article in:

No IVF can also be used for men that have fertility problems. If there is a low sperm count or they arent very strong IVF can be done for that reason although its less common.

My friend didn't have a problem with fertility but she kept having ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy lodged in the falopian tube). This causes a huge danger to the mother and can kill in entreme cases and of course abortion is the only option so IVF took her healthy egg and her husbands sperm, fertilised it and bypassed the fertilisation in the tube by implanting it in the womb. Hey presto, healthy baby girl born 5 weeks ago. They have eggs frozen for next time!
