We are not having a drug war . In reality , drugs are a pohibited item so we are having a prohibition. History has proven that it will not work. If the 70 trillion dollars spent on fighting drugs had been put into rehabilitation and education some real good would have been acomplished. The so called drug wars are the very definition of failed policy. Drugs are easier to get, cheaper, and stronger than they were 30 years ago when this was started by Nixon.Nobody benefits from putting nonviolent people charged with relativly minor crimes in cages with murderers, rapists, and other violent criminals that should be locked up to protect society. If a person takes a drug and robs a store they should be in jail. If a person takes a drug and goes home to watch tv why should they be even bothered? The truth of the matter is that the public hears about the horror storys that happen to users of drugs on rare occassions but what about the millions of people that use recreational drugs and never have any problems or troubles with it. In law enforcement and rehab they have a saying that is so true"you can get over an addiction but not a conviction" If you would like to know the TRUTH about drugs and the law visit the website below. But if you are anti-drug be prepared to have everything you thought was true about drugs and the laws concerning them totally and completely shattered and proven incorrect by the major players of the last 30 years of the prohibition-all judges and high ranking law enforcement officials.

Supposedly, the punishment fits the crime.
Supposedly Society is satisfied with the punishment passed.
If one is not punished when found guilty, how then can one understand their wrongful act and then begin the road to rehabilitation?
You will not rehabilitate ANYONE who does not wishes to.
However, if punishment is not rendered, then that person has no reason to rehabilitate his/hers self, after punishment installs upon them the knowledge of knowing what they done to someone or others.
Then they may wish to understand what Rehabilitation means, or is.

I worked in a state pen for 4 years, and have since been a cop for 6 years. I can honestly say that rehabilitation works for about 5% the inmate population. The VAST majority are simply criminals and leeches on society and always will be.

In many cases, it does work...which is why those programs exist in the first place. Plus if you look in the long run, someone who just gets punished but not rehabilitated is more likely to commit another crime after....there are prob many success stories as well as failure stories...

Rehabilitation works for some people, but for others (especially child rapists), the urge to commit crimes is hardwired in their brain. It's a sickness that cannot be cured. I agree with what you say though. The prison system doesn't promote rehabilitation like it ought to.

i could kiss you for asking! I would invite anyone to dig deep into there hometown's district court records, and and see whats going on these days in our law community. As we watch the middle class Americans slip into poverty status(down here where i have been 4 some time now)you can see that local government needs new ways to fix there economic crisis. The most common has been to cut the costs of housing inmates by creating what they call community sentencing. But is this Rehab? No, revenue! Rehab gives people qualified treatment to bring back ones self worth as well ones worth to the community. This not being the case when sentenced by courts. They create in most cases a qualifying number of participants to federally funded programs by exaggeration of criminal behavior of defendants .Place them in "programs", costs to defendant, that amounts to no more than monthly 75 dollar urinalysis visits and a check in sheet. That'll fix em ! Yeah, probabilities of more costs to defendant if he fails UA!The other hand is punishment. What! By means of removing from society?Yes! for reasonable preset amounts of time ,(this being key), based upon severity of crime.

sry a book by calirider what do you think?

criminals need punishment, but we don't have a system of justice, rather a system of revenue!!!! It's blind, fat , and hungry!

Bottom line--rehab results in someone being a contributing member of society...punishment just discourages them and adds to the problem of antisocial behaviors.
