how come some people are paying that much for playstation 3 on e-bay

Some people are just too crazy and a bit carried away by the media frenzy rule: Be the first to get it. I would rather pay something more meaningful like playstation 2, and get half a price or more from what it cost at its first release. Also, I don't think you can sell your playstation 1 and 2 as playstation 3. If life was like this, you would'nt need a playstation 3.

Haha. Nice idea but I'm the type that's careful on ebay so I probaly wouldn't trust that. But who knows? Maybe you'll find some complete idiot that'll fall for it.
