Since the Vulcan is a new model, I'd suggest the Honda.
The VStars seemed a little under powered, to me.

My first bike was an 84 Honda Shadow 700. It was a great bike to learn on, plenty of power, but not too much. It handled well and was very reliable.
I love the new shadows. They're very stylish and look like a lot of fun to ride.
I would go with anything but the Vulcan. I rode a Vulcan 1100 and the thing made my hands go numb after 5 minutes from all the vibration. I didn't like the seat position or how it handled. I think you'll be happy with the Honda or the Yamaha. I test rode a V star 650 once and it was surprisingly comfortable for such a small bike. It seemed like I was riding a 1100. But I only rode it around the block.
I owned the Shadow for 4 years and I would buy another one in a second if I went back to cruisers. I mostly ride sport bikes these days.

honda Shadow is a GREAT bike for what your needs are. low maintanence and easy to handle. You will eventually outgrow it, but by then your riding tastes may change from cruiser to touring or some other fancy. Your heigth may be a problem and cause you and uncomfortable riding position. Make sure to put a few miles on before you decide on it. Possibly you can have the dealer adjust the handlebars and foot controls to custom fit you. This bike is a great around town ride, but for distance you will need somthing more powerful and comfortable- well when I say distance I mean 300+ mi/day touring. Honda has a great reputation that has been earned. I am a BMW rider, but own several hondas ( a shadow VLX 600 among them). They never let me down and always hold their value! Not to sway you but at least take a look at a used BMW R1200C- well within your budget and I have seen odometers with over 120,000miles and no major mechanical problems aside from routine up keep! Lots of low end power and great looks- a practical investment- but that's just my opinion

Your best bet is to go to a dealer that has a variety of bikes , (Sounds like you already did ), I have Honda 750aero but I have outgrown the bike ,5 ft 7 180lbs the better half is 5 ft 4 120lbs its great for around town but on highway when your cruising around 70 mph and need to pass a semi are line of cars it just don't have that punch you need , where trading in for 1300 hundred ,other than that its a awesome bike and very fast ,did have it over 100mph but by myself at the time , happy riding !

Include the Honda Aero 750 in your choices. More of a cruiser look than the Spirit. They all will be underpowered in about 6 months. Save up some downpayment and go to at least 1100cc.

According to most bike magazines (not in LOVE with the stuff out of Milwaukee) the best and biggest bang for your buck is the Suzuki C50 (in your price range). I own one and would have to agree with the mags. It's physically a big bike so you won't feel cramped while riding. It has adequate power and has a retro look I find appealing. Of course your question will get any number of responses saying my bike is best so it's still up to you. Actually your price range dictates a cruiser in the 800cc range and because this class of bike is the best selling you won't find a really bad bike at all. The class is very competitive. But...if you believe the bike mags then go with the C50 Suzuki.

I would go with the Vulcan, with your height the others will be too cramped. Hauling a passenger, the extra power will come in handy.
