Regional economic groups such as trade pacts tend to draw member countries together politically a bit, perhaps by getting govt ministers to talk to one another. But by themselves they don't change much politically. Myanmar is still a dictatorship years after joining ASEAN. Similarly, EFTA hasn't turned Liechtenstein into a democracy or led Norway to copy the Swiss canton system.
