I am looking for a website (presumably still online), your definition of success (eg profit or hits or something else), and a reason why the website tops your list (you could also give a shortlist of 3 websites).

Google. Most people might say sites that are popular right now, or sites that sell things, but Google is probably by far the biggest influence on the net. They have a hand in everything.

My guess would be ebay.com They make money on everything that is sold, and is listen on their site. Profit, profit, profit. Google would probably rank #2, especially with its humble beginnings in some college students apartment.
