I've used AVG on and off for years with no trouble. Aside from being free, it also uses fewer resources than a lot of the paid programs, which can slow anything but the latest computers down to a crawl. Of course, I also use common sense, like not opening unknown attachments or opening files from a floppy without scanning. Periodically I'll use the Trend Housecall online check just to be sure. I also have Spybot or AdAware on any computer I use, and my e-mail programs are set to shovel most spam into its own folder.

Personally, I use the AOL AntiVirusShield. Don't let the name AOL scare you. AntiVirusShield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.
In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, AntiVirusShield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.

AOL AntiVirusShield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources.
Free to anyone, AOL member or not from:

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

According to people smarter than me: NOD32 (not free), even both Kaspersky (not free either), AVG and SpyBot (last is anty spyware which should be installed along AV no matter which one you are using) are fine too.
Bad personal experience: AntyVir
PS.
“technology will detect spywares that other product miss” , "remove 100% od spyeares,,..(...)"– that ridiculous claims in my opinion. According to most reputable sources I know of – no single AS is able to detect more than 50-75% of existing spywares, therefore most experts recommends using more than few (considering what said, practically every AS fit claim: “technology will detect spywares that other product miss” ,)
