I had a common water snake for many years. I have seen them in the wild in IL and IN. Probably lots of other places. They eat fish; guppies, minnows, and goldfish. A very easy snake to take care of.

Part of owning a snake is feeding it mice, the only snake I know of that doesn't eat mice would be a garter snake but they arn't very interesting if you ask me. if you're not a vegitarian think of it this way, it's just like eating a steak or a hamburger, you go out to the pet store, go to the frozen food section and get a little pack of frozen mice ( If you do get a snake that eats mice don't feed live, it can be dangerous to the snake) The mice were raised in a lab and killed humanely just for the consumption of snakes and/other reptiles that may eat them.if it makes you feel better after you give the snake the mouse you could just walk out of the room and then you wont have to watch it eat, I know my snake won't eat anyway if theres some1 in the room. It's not cruel and don't let anyone tell you it is cruel because unless they are vegitarian then they are being complete hipocrites because they eat dead cows, chickens, and pigs at leats once a day where as a snake is only eating a dead mouse once a week or so.

It's a fact of life. Snakes are carniverous (I do believe) and eat other living things... (even once alive but now frozen). You ever had a hamburger? Where do you think that comes from? Cows.
A snake is a pretty cool pet to have. I enjoy the attention that she gets from everyone! You just gotta feed her the right way.

A garter snake won't eat mice. If you want a vegetarian reptile, try getting an iguana.

Snakes are all predators-there are no vegetarian snakes. If it bothers you that badly, you might want to reconsider.
BTW, snakes shouldn't be fed live rodents-they can get hurt. You can buy frozen rodents and thaw them for your snake-that is much safer for the snake.
