because hamsters will kill each other. gross but true. it's okay if you let two play together for a little as long as you're with them and can pull them apart right away, but you have to be careful.

as for housing, I find an open barred cage is best for summer or hot temps. and habit trails are best for cold winter months. put a good thick layer of cedar shaving on the bottom of the cage. you should buy a house for it to sleep in, fairly cheap and they come in all shapes and colors. playing you should have a wheel and hamsters really like parer towel and toilet paper rolls, minus the toilet paper and paper towels of course. try giving it some cotton balls, they love to stuff them in their mouth pouch and they use them as bedding. there are also hamster balls which can be quite fun and are good if you want to watch tv and let your hamster roam around the room because it's hard to loose a big colorful ball.

a salt lick is good for them to shew on, but they also make chew stick, either works. they need something to chew on though. get normal hamster food (a blend with a lot of sunflower seeds is best because that's they're favorite). and they make treats as well with things like cranberries and nuts in them. yuo'll need a water bottle for it and make sure it always has plenty of clean fresh water.

that should be all you need to know really. other than that just have fun with it. be careful while handling it, hamsters are delicate when it comes to squeezing them or tossing them, which is why they aren't' actually good kids pets, well that and the biting. but as long as you let your hamster get sleep and get used to it's cage for a day or two you should be fine with biting, slowly get it used to your hands and smell before handling.

here's a site with hamster breeds, it has pictures so you can find your's. http://www.petwebsite.com/pic_showsub.asp?cat_id=4&cat=Hamsters

If I could see a picture of your hamster I could probably tell you what type you have. All hamsters should be kept seperate as they are solitary creatures and very much like to live alone. The sex should be easy to tell. If it is a boy it will have testys and a girl of course will not. As for the shelter, you should give them something that they can nest in and create a cozy home. I would say cotton balls to shread, you can buy hamster fluff or even straw or hay would do. Make sure that you use a good cage bedding, I suggest carefresh bedding. It is made of recycled paper and obsorbs their mess better. Make sure that you clean the cage at least once a week. Any pet store sells hamster food and supplies. If you go to a pet store you should have no problem finding an employee to help you, they should even be able to tell you what type of hamster you have. Make sure that the cage is escape proof. All hamster made cages are a good choice and I would stear clear of any thing that is not made specifically for hamsters unless it is a 10 or twenty or more gallon aquarium with a secure lid. Make sure that the hamster has an appropriate water bottle that is not goin to drip constently and a chew safe food dish, and make sure that they have safe things to chew on as they need to keep their teeth grinded down. For more detail on care you can search the internet for hamster care books, go to a local book store or the pet store.
