I want software that converts from one format to another that are recognized by regular programs such as Windows Media Player and Winamp.

There are "open-source" products that are free and accomplish this, especially if you run the Mac or Linux platform, though many are ported over to Windows also.
http://www.afterdawn.com is one of my favorite sites for such help.
