Would anyone have an idea of what a typical 'sign on' bonus would be? When a publisher decides to go with a writer, what's a typical amount the writer's given?...

There is no such thing as "typical" I'm afraid.

The stories you will read in the papers about massive amounts being paid for first novels are rare in the extreme. The only thing that is "typical" is rejection after rejection and the unwillingness of most publishers to take any risks (hence the spate of "celebrity" books).

Most writers I know are pleased just to be published and will gratefully accept any fees they may be paid as a bonus (and this can be as little as expenses fees for instance) in the hope that the next book will be better paying.

I have been lucky enough to have articles accepted for a few magazines in the past and my fees have ranged from £50 to £500 depending on the magazine's circulation and the size and detail of the article I wrote.

Although they do get a bad press, you could do worse than employ a literary agent if you are new to the business and trying to break in. They may be an expensive luxury, but most do know the ropes.

It depends on how popular the book is. For example, let's take J.K.Rowling, who gets billions, versus Terry Brooks, who most ppl haven't even heard of, and who gets thousands. However, if you manage to get a fairly large sized book published, don't fear going hungry or becoming poor. You'll have enough to live on, just don't expect to be a millionaire....but who knows, right?

Ever hear of starving artists? It includes writers too.Unfortunately, most don't make very much .That's why there are government grants for writers.

It depends on how good the writer is, and how big they get.
