Check to make sure your battery terminals are clean and tight, if so, trace the positive (+)cable to the starter solenoid (this should be the first connection after the battery) there you will see 2 large terminals on each end, and one or two smaller terminals between. Using a heavy cable(battery jumper cables work well)or the handles of a pair of pliers, CAREFULLY jump across from one large terminal to the other. Take care not to touch the surrounding metal parts, and yes some sparks might fly. If the starter cranks, replace the solenoid. If it doesn't crank you may need to repair or replace the starter. Solenoids are fairly cheap, and easy to replace. However if your starter does spin , and you replace the solenoid, it still won't crank, you may have a wiring problem from the ignition switch to the solenoid

If the battery cables are clean and secure, there is one other test that can help. With a volt meter connected to the battery terminals, ask someone to try to crank the van. Watch the meter. If the voltage doesn't drop more than 1/2 volt, or if it drops more than 3 volts, replace the starter.

Good Luck

Keep tapping on that crappy old starter for a while to get every penny out of it. Then replace the starter yourself.
