Unless you plan to upgrade to a larger tank in a few years you should get a musk turtle or mud turtle. These turtles rarely exceed 5 inches as adults, and they have great personalities. Since you are only half filling your tank you have the equivalent of a 20 gallon tank. This may be too small for even 1 of these turtles. I suggest building or buying a canopy hood and filling the tank all the way up. Setup your basking area above the top of the tank and make use of the limited volume of water you have. These are aquatic turtles and they prefer to swim. (although mud and musk turtles do walk on the bottom a lot)

I was looking at getting a turtle but then got a tortoise instead. The {musk turtle} is the smallest of all turtles, quite cute as babies as well, hant seen an adult one but i bet theyre just as sweet. Yellow Bellied Sliders, are about te same size as red eared sliders but just different breed.

Hope this is ok

Good Luck on whatever you get !! x

The two that come to mind are painted turtles or soft-shelled. I think painteds are so adorable; care is similar to a red-eared but they don't grow as big (if you've seen adult red-eareds, they're pretty bulky, even in captivity). I think their max size is something like eight inches.

Soft-shelleds are really cute too, and exotic. I believe you need sand because they burrow, but it's worth it (and I think sand looks great in a tank). Pet stores have started carrying them more widely, too. I'm not sure how big they grow, but they're so cool-looking =)

I have two red-eareds that I absolutely love but since you're not looking for those, painteds and soft-shelleds are the other two I would have gotten. Have fun with your turtle(s)!
