A Renaissance man is a person who excels in multiple fields particularly the arts and the sciences. The epitome of a Renaissance man is Leonardo da Vinci and Goethe. Another term for this is Polymath.

you pretty much answered your own question during that time periods people were encouraged to broaden their interests and learn as much as possible in any field that interested them so there were some people who spread out all of the place and could talk on hundreds of subjects without just repeating the buzz words that we hear so much of today. education and knowledge was almost worshiped in that time as they had come out of the dark ages and anything was better than that learning was extremely cool them to bad it is not that way now for a great deal of the popularation.,
