Ads and also they are traded on the stock market at a value of more than they are worth. Google and Yahoo do have other ways of making money like charging for different services like Yahoo auctions and Google has banking services.

They make money by advertising. Google is exceptionally good at this. If you type "Clothing" at google, you will see several "sponsored links" as well as relative text-based ads on the right hand area of the screen. These links are provided by the search engine through contracts with companies as advertisements.
Some companies pay google just for people to see the add, others pay each time a person clicks a link, and others pay each time a person clicks a link and buys a product.

Advertising. On Yahoo it is very plain to see many of the ads. There is more money in the search items. Both Yahoo and Google have "sponsor links" you will see when doing a search. These sponsors pay to have their link posted.

These are just few examples ~ there many other ways these companies make money.

They make money the same way magazines make money. They sell ad space. They receive money from sponsors of searches. The more you pay the higher up you show on search lists. Like you ever notice that ebay comes up when you search for anything? They must pay a pretty penny to be on so many search results.

Advertising, have you seen the things on the right of the screen when you do a search in google, those things are called adwords and advertisers pay to put them there.

i agree with the first guy...the advertizments and popup ads....urm you know your isp when you pay them...every website you go on gets money from your taxes..you know how ppl say the government looks at ur internet history well they do and when you pay taxes most of the money goes to search websites like yahoo and google
