Hello. I am a Freemason. I am of the esoteric Order, American Order of Co-Masonry. We admit men and women (yes, women as well), of all races, of all religions, who believe in a Supreme Being, who are over 21 years of age, who are tolerant of other religions and races, who are of good moral character.
We look for those who wish to act in Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth to help make the world a better place by improving themselves.
We use as our model the building of Solomon's Temple ( a metaphor for making ourselves fitting places for the indwelling place of The Ineffable Light) and we take for our symbols the tools of ancient stone masons. To mold the character and temperment of a human spirit is as difficult as shaping stone.
We are not a religion. We are a place wherein we put aside differences of religion and politics and instead talk of how mankind should treat its members.
We do our best not just to talk, but to act on the Level with all, to deal on the Square, to walk upright on the Plumb.
Thank you for asking. If I can be of more assistance, feel free to write me. The link below explains more about our Order.

Freemasons is a group of men dedicated to high ideals and benefiting society. You'll find a lot of doctors, scientists, lawyers and politicians in the Freemasons, but you'll also find craftsmen as in carpenters, engineers, masons, and such.
One very famous thing Freemasonry has done is create the Shriner's Hospitals were burn victims and children from around the world are treated free of charge. There are no bills there.
A lot of very fine men are Freemasons and they are not limited to just the USA. At any university, there's a good chance that at least one well respected professor is a Mason. At any hospital in Europe or the English-speaking world, you might find one. There's even a few in the Pentagon, Parliament and Congress.
They are the builders of society.

Freemasons are a fraternity "men only" There is also a female version called the Eastern Star. They have three appendent bodies the York Rite, Scottish Rite, and Shriners. Masons raise money for charity providing millions of dollars a day to various charities and it costs about 8 million a day to run a Shriners hospital where a child is treated at no charge. A society of secrets rather than a secret society all our rituals are plastered all over the Internet. But our grips, keys, and tokens are kept as secret as possible in the information age. Most of the answers above are correct.
But consider this.
Freemasonry is an organization of good men who believe in a supreme being and were proposed to a local lodge by other good men. The organization takes a good man and by introducing him to others and teaching him lessons in morality makes him a better man. The fraternity flourishes wherever good men can be found and is the oldest such society in the world.

The fraternity of Freemasonry uses the allegorical metaphors of operative stonemasons' tools and implements against the backdrop of the building of the Temple of King Solomon, to convey what is most generally defined as: A peculiar (some say particular or beautiful) system of morality veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols
