GOOD GOD! I remember the ants there.. I was born in Texas and as a child, I remember them well.. falling in a fire ant patch...
I remember as a science/boy scout project, my older brother got an old army cot (wire bottom) and dug 4 holes around the ant hill, he put coffee cans filled with some insecticide and put the legs of the cot in them and we would lay on the cot and study the ants... Until they got smart enough to find a way to crawl up the cot.. haha!
My granddad used to pour gas down their holes, or car oil.. (dont know how environmentally clean that was).. They have a huge network of tubes and tunnels under the ground that might cover yards of land.. goodluck!

I hate fire ants with a passion!!!! I grew up in IL and moved to Austin TX...what a rude awakening, literally they had come in through the weep holes and into the walls and came out the outlets. My bed was covered and so was I. I tried amdro, which does help, but in order to rid my house I had to call in a professional. It took a few months, but they eventually disappeared from my home and I haven't needed to have the exterminator back. As far as outside is concerned...I have learned to deal with them without the use of poison and I keep my foundation and weep holes clean and clear. Amdro will kill birds and it's not safe for pets or kids. Good luck, watch where you step, and don't lay in the grass :)

When I lived in Florida, I had good results using Amdro pellets--easy to deploy, very effective. Other route would be to hire an exterminator to treat the yard. I doubt there are any good homemade remedies--those ants are infernal; you must get rid of them for your safety and the safety of your family/pets. Don't bother trying to experiment with homemade remedies; you need an actual insecticide designed for fire ants.

The best homemade is what careermom said: Boiling water! Get a big pot of it, transport to the area, stir up the moung and saturate the mound with it. The size of the mound will determine the amount of hot water needed. Good luck.

Equal parts of amonia and bleach. Do not mix in advance. Pour one then the other around and on the mound. Be sure to be up-wind, do not breath the fumes (you'll see fumes happen after a few seconds.)

Gently capture them, (they must be kept in individual containers or they will fight) transport them to a park and release them near a source of fresh water. .
