Sony made batteries for many brands including Dell, HP Apple and themselves among many others. Here is the scoop however:
Since they may explode only while charging, certain airlines ie Korean Airlines, not the FAA, is restricting the use of all laptops with battery not plugged in, or plugged into the aircraft power without the battery installed to prevent explosion.

I thought Sony made Viao laptops.. Compaqs are Parsario.. You should have a talk with that salesman! Besides if that was proven true wouldn't it be all over the news. Plus you think they be sued by now if they did. My Laptop has a loud fan. it wirls when it gets very hot but so far no one has complained about it.

The laptop batteries made by Sony had a bursting problem. There was a recall of all the batteries of a particular batch. I'm not sure whether they are not allowed in planes or not.

This does not appear to be true. The FAA website does mention that they were advised of a battery fire problem relating to laptop batteries, but no flight restrictions were mentioned.
