my old paper shredder is not working properly anymore.
what do i do with it?
i don't want it to end up in the landfill!
can you tell me of places that repair shredders?
and/or how do you dispose of a malfunctioning shredder?

haha! i luv the "shred it" suggestions! classic!

& thanx 4 the autopsy idea, unfortunately, i'm not even slightly mechanically-inclined.

the whole thing about not wanting it 2 end up in the landfill is this:

if i have this question, then thousands of people have the same question. think of 10's or 100's of 1000's of shredders in the landfills year after year after year. it's a bigger question than what just 2 do with my 1 broken machine.

going thru the manufacturer will cost as much as a new shredder, which is y i'm looking 4 shops or individuals who can probably fix the problem in minutes. if not, i would think that there is way it can be environmentally recycled. putting it in the trash & hoping 4 the best isn't good enuf.

once we figure out how 2 solve the problem, the word can be spread, and 1000's of pounds of pollution can be avoided.

last nite, my patient's father offered 2 try 2 fix it. i'll take him up on his offer & let u know.

thanx SO much 4 all ur answers! :

shreaders are cheap, if it doesn't work anymore cut off the plug and put it into the garbage. I understand your concern but I don't know that there are reusable parts and it costs more to repair it than it's worth plus I don't think people would take on that job of fixing it because labor is so high. The trash dump will smash it to a small item and any metal parts might be salvaged by the county.

Most shredders are cheaply made and end up in the landfill along with the shredded paper. If you use a shredding service you can avoid the costs of replacement shredders. Ship 'n' Shred is an alternative to the disposable shredder and the paper gets recycled.

this may sound odd but if you are the mechanical type of person who is into mechanisms and electronics, why not autopsy it and/or try to make it into something else (be creative with it's parts) or rebuild it (replace motor or broken circuit) never know all it might need is just a small motor or wire that can be found at just about any electronics store or junk drawer. good luck

you never know if it will work out better then it was when it started malfunctioning.

You put it in the trash. You can't be that attached to it,,,come on! It would most likely cost more to fix than buy a new on....

Call the manufacturer and ask where it can be repaired, or, donate it to a homeless shelter, they probably have someone that can repair it.
