I've been reading about all these requirements for saltwater quality, and I wasd wondering, could you just use water from the ocean. I have access to the Gulf of Mexico, if that makes a difference.

it is not advised to use water from the ocean as it can contain pollution, parasites, and other harmful things.

However, some people have tried mixing ocean water and synthetic salt water with pretty good results.

Even though I personally wouldn't reccomend it, you can still try it.

I don't think it would hurt, really. The Monterrey Bay Aquarium pumps in water straight from the ocean and they have great success with their fish. I don't think i would use the water too close to shore just because that's where the ocean naturally skims the pollutants. I think to be on the safe side i would run the usual parameters on the water and try putting some cheaper fish in a small 10-20 gal fish tank before going main stream with the ocean water thing. If it works out, i think i would be envious-salt's not cheap.

NO! I have the Gulf in my backyard, it won't work! You have to be able to keep PH and salinity levels steady in your tank. The bigger the tank the easier it is to control. Don't go less than a 75 gal. on saltwater. If you have an average size home, try to go 100. It makes it so much easier to keep everything level. You don't want to loose $50.00 fish because you couldn't get your water right! If your fortunate and have more than an average home, go bigger! But don't tell me about it, I'll be jealous with my little 75.
