They are definitely lemon cucumbers. Named so for their looks and not their taste. They were probably "planted" by a bird raiding someone else's garden. Freebie plants are usually the healthiest ones.

Well, first of all, how do you know that they are cucumbers? And, if they are cucumbers, how did the seeds of round cucumbers get in your yard?

Round cucumbers are a hybrid of the long green ones, and, yes, they are edible. But, I've never heard of them growing in the wild.

You say, however, that you have a new home. Could the previous owners have planted a garden in the back yard? If so, and they planted that hybrid variety of cucumber, it's entirely possible that a round cucumber or two was allowed to drop to the ground, rot, and the seed germinated this past year. After all, that's what they are designed to do, you know.

If you know who the previous home owners are, I would give them a call. Otherwise, the round cucumbers might not be cucumbers and I wouldn't eat them.

We grew 'lemon' cucumbers this year that sound like what you are describing. They are slightly larger than golf ball and have a mild flavor.
