How would you go about dealing with a goldfish with an injured (bloddy and swollen) lip? what may have casued this? Just curios- it seems harsh just to leave it be and have it suffer.

how badly is the fish hurt? are there any more fish in the tank with it? you should add some aquarium salt (1 tbsp per 5 gallons) to help it heal
if it looks like an infection, you may need to treat with antibiotics
good luck

You can purchase liquid antibiotic drops to treat the water which will help him heal faster. Sounds like another fish is chewing on him or he may have gotten wedged somewhere and tore his skin freeing himself. If you're not sure what caused it take the fish with some of the tank water to your local aquarium store. Get the water tested and have them take a look at your fish.

It depends on whether it's an injury or an infection. If it's an injury, I would make sure the water is pristine and keep an eye on it. If it's an infection, I'd treat with either oral or bath antibiotics. most likely kanamycin.

put it in a small container of water and put in the freezer. Its metabolism will slow down and it will eventually go to sleep. Much more humane than flushing. Also never release your captive animals to the wild. They will spread diseases to the native animals.

it's probably a bacterial infection... get some antibiotics and do some water change.

Nothing you can do. Either it heals or it doesn't.
