Take twenty of each, feel free to nominate a group I neglected to mention. . . which would prevail and why? You'll increase your chance of winning if you also mention how.

Oops. Forget to mention. Level playing field: no weapon technology more advanced than blades, bows and arrows. Navy SEALS can't just call down a napalm strike on the battle field.

First of all, brilliant question. Nice one. To answer I'll deal with each group in turn.

Pirates: Rank outsiders. Relied heavily on ambushing soft targets then making a quick getaway. Physically in poor condition (rum, scurvy, pox, VD) and badly disciplined with little/no training. They'd be cut down like wheat by whoever was nearest.

Ninjas: I'm feeling the black-clad assassins as favourites here you know... Why? Trained rigorously for years in Ninjitsu, they're expert martial artists, able to kill very quickly with either weapons OR bare hands. Trained specifically to overcome samurai tactics they'd have no problems with them and I don't see anybody but the SEALS having the teamwork and training to best them.

Samurai: As bodyguards and warriors, the samurai were pretty ace. The Samurai Code says "a samurai must consider himself as one who is already dead" so that they would have no fear or hesitation in battle. But is their martial skill too rigid and inflexible? The Ninjas would settle their hash I think, as would the modern training and tactics of the SEALS.

Vikings: A warrior culture for whom death in battle was the ultimate honour, they'd be all berserker rage and howling frenzy, regardless of their lifetime of weapons training. Initially they'd make an impact, but their enemies care more about staying unhurt/alive so as soon as the Vikings start losing men, they'd be on for a quick exit, becoming more and more outnumbered until it's curtains for them.

Apache Warriors: Although the Apache were used to being in small war parties of about 20 braves, which goes in their favour, as does their familiarity with bow, knife and club/axe, the Apache were a horse nation. Without their horses, they wouldn't have the edge that made them so feared by the US cavalry. They'd give a good account of themselves but on foot, without their local knowledge/ambushing tactics to swing the odds in their favour, they'd fall beneath the blades of their enemies.

Navy SEALS: Another clear front runner. Modern nutrition and modern healthcare mean the SEALS have the edge in fitness, stamina and resistance to injury. Their training is amongst the best in the world too, so their close-combat fighting would be fearsome. Not to mention their intense camaraderie and team skills... the SEALS would chop through most any of the others like a well-oiled machine but here, in this particular fight, they have a weakness. Their very team spirit could undo them when any are wounded. A wounded soldier means three men out of the battle (2 to carry/care for the other) whereas a dead man is only one man out of the battle. The Ninjas would have no compunction in leaving their wounded to bleed where they lay. Mercy is for the weak!!

Spartans: Another fearsome fighting force, but most of the battles from which they got their reputation (such as Thermoplyae) were ones where they were present in their thousands, not just 20. True, the Spartans were a warrior race and, for their time, had solid tactical skills, but those skills were developed for big infantry/cavalry battles. Their pride and warrior culture would mean fierce resistance - last man standing and all that - but Ninjas or SEALS would wear these boys down eventually.

Amazons: There is some debate as to whether Amazons actually existed in the way they are popularly believed to have, but for the sake of argument, let's say they did. It still doesn't change that fact that even the fiercest, best trained female warrior is at a severe disadvantage in a hand-to-hand skirmish with similarly trained and equipped male opponents. Slaughtered like swine, they'd be.

So, who's the winner? It's a close call but for my money I'd say the Ninjas would come out on top. Agile, fast, superbly trained, deadly with or without a weapon, unencumbered by concern for his comrades and tactically superb, they'd have that tiniest edge over the SEALS, I believe. Close one to call though.

That's my twopence worth anyhow, and whether or not I win, I hope you enjoyed my answer.

Ok considering. In all fairness it was an open play field. With just bows. Swords ect. No guns as you said nor advanced weapon technology. So SEALS are out immediatly there trained in modern day weapons. Not bows arrows and swords. Yes they may have an edge in tactics and stealth but the SEALS would be plain and simply buggered by any of the rest as they have been training with the said weapons alot longer. So SEALs are out ruled. Amazons dont have the stamina to beat the male opponents sure they were a mighty force. But in large numbers. Not 20. Samurai on the other hand. Fight with pride and hounor and could well be a top ranker in such a thing. As for the rest its all reseanobly the same, apart from the spartans... They were trained to be the best they were the SEALS of there time. Hard core fighters who new there blade aswell there commander. Shield in hand and there sword in a force of 20 would slaughter all others. They can form there turtle shell to protect themselves from the arrows. They can fight for prolonged periods. There strength is that off a todays heavywieghts. There agility and speed are at a high. With there metal armour. Shield and sword they would slaughter any in there path. I'd like to see 20 ninja's take them down. Considering shurikans dont peirce armour. The seals would be plain fucked. As would the rest. The only ones who could combat such a force would be the vikings. But whose to know it would be a epic battle, and only luck wold provide a winner if any.

Right now, as you are reading this, a Ninja has snuck into your home and has injected a lethal poison directly into your heart. You are now dead. The Vikings have plundered your home and are on their way back to Norway. Pirates have imbibed all of your booze and are now sleeping it off on your couch, the Spartans are having sex with each other in your bedroom, and Samurai are writing beautiful haiku's about your quick and silent death. The Amazons are looking at the Spartans having sex with each other and think that it's a good idea and do the same. The Apache roll your carcass out of the way and move in, since turn about is fair play, and the Navy Seals have cleaned everything up so well that you would never know that anything ever happened.

Championship:
Ninjas vs. SEALs

Specialized skills and stealth bring these two groups to the Finals. Odds favor Ninjas slightly. Ninjas can work as individuals, while SEALs work best as a team. SEALs' firearms may give away positions, making them easy marks for Ninja's when the battle heats up.

However, the field of battle can affect the odds. An open field provides little cover. SEALs can blow away Ninjas with sheer firepower. In settings with good cover, whether forest or village, Ninjas regain the edge.

My pick overall: Ninjas win. 20-13 (opponents killed)

SAS (special air service) every time they train harder and get trained better than the others also they are chosen from the cream of the rest of the armed services in the UK, pirates are untrained, as were vikings, Apaches warriors obviously lost or America would be run by Apaches. samurai had power over unarmed peasants, ninjas were assassins in the night concentrating on people that were asleep at the time, and as for the seals they are trained by the SAS because they know the SAS is a better force

Pirates = nahhh their sword skills are no where near as good as a Samurai.

Ninjas = Close combat they would be one of the best.

Samurai = Again close combat they would be good.

Vikings = Too slow.

Apache warriors = Depends how quickly they can reload their arrows, they would be good at longer range but once they get close (If anyone of the enemy is still standing) then they would loose.

Navy Seals = Normally they would do well but this time their technical advantage has been taken away. Quite good at close range but not as good as Ninja's or Samurai.

Spartans = Again i don't think they would have the skill and speed to win.

Amazons = Like the Apache's Amazons would be quite good (but not as good) at long range but slightly better at close range than a Apache.

So i would go in reverse order of who is best:

8th = Pirates (Would get slaughtered at long range and close).
7th = Vikings (Beaten before they had a chane to get close)
6th = Spartans (Same as Vikings).
5th = Amazons (Not quite quick enough to cope with the top 4).
4th = Navy Seals (Restricted by the low tech rule).
3rd = Apache Warriors (Do well at long range but its not enough).
2nd = Ninjas (Quick and aviod a lot of long range but would loose against the Samurai sword).

1st = Samurai (Far too quick for the Pirates, Vikings and Amazons. Navy Seals would have to use more close combat and have no chance against the Samurai. Would avoid alot of long range stuff from the Apache's then do them at close. The Ninja would be very quick but i don't think but the Samurai's sword skills would be little to much for them.

but they would all be slaughtered if Rambo was there, he wouldn't even get a scratch lol.

Did i get to carried away with this, does it show that i am a little bored right now with a lot of time on my hands? lol

Spartans, because they were trained from little kids to become warriors and have a better record of winning than the other groups you've mentioned.

Oh yeah, this is excluding Navy seals (why did you mention them, they don't fit) who have advanced technological weapons.

The pirates would win, because they are the only group with boats, and the others would drown. Except the Navy Seals maybe. Do they have submarines? Pirates would still win though, because Davy Jones can summon up the Cracken.

Have you been reading my question about an all out battle between Smurfs / Ooompa Loompa's / Munchkin's etc ???? - No matter !!!!

I'm guessing Ninjas - They have a variety of weapons that could be used (under your rules), as well as good knowledge of unarmed combat, very agile, cunning and ruthless.
