Well, in my own little world the sky is clear. As in see-through. It's orange when it rains and the rain is green. The night sky is light purple and the stars are brown with green dots in the middle. The sun is white and the moon is black. Fish also speak and there is a toad president, but that's another story.

To understand why the sky is blue, we need to understand a little about light. Light is a form of radiation, electromagnetic energy that travels in the form of waves possessing electric and magnetic properties. This form of energy does not need matter to propagate. We can characterize this energy by its wavelength -- the distance along a wave from one crest to another. Our eyes are remote sensors that are sensitive to light with wavelengths between approximately 0.4-0.7 microns.

When light beams interact with particles suspended in air, the energy can be scattered or absorbed. Energy that is scattered causes a change in direction of the light path. The amount of light that is being scattered is a function of the size of the particle relative to the wavelength of the light falling on the particle. Particles that are tiny compared to the wavelength of the light scatter selectively according to wavelength. While all colors are scattered by air molecules, violet and blue are scattered most. The sky looks blue, not violet, because our eyes are more sensitive to blue light (the sun also emits more energy as blue light than as violet)-

This time of year it is the color of our sunsets here in SC. They are sometimes orange, purple, blue, pink, charcoal, azure, peach, lavender, red, or yellow...sometimes all at the same time. It looks like God just took artistic liscence and went crazy with the pallette. November is the best time of year for sunsets here. The rest of the time, my ideal sky color is a light azure blue with little or no clouds. It makes me happy.
